It was great to see so many social sciences teachers in our workshop at the Social Sciences Conference (SOCCON) conference in Wellington last month. The Retirement Commission’s Director of Policy and Research Dr Patrick Nolan was one of the keynotes of the SOCCON sharing insights and projections on what the next 25 years will look like for Aotearoa.
Learning Lead Yasmin Frazer and Learning Specialist Claire Bailey also held a workshop focused on equipping students with the essential critical thinking skills for sound financial decision making. Our 1-hour interactive workshop created an opportunity for teachers to share experiences and exchange ideas about this topical subject.
Teachers reflected on their own money personalities and took the time to consider how their own financial habits and attitudes have been shaped. They used these insights to consider how they can be more effective teachers of financial education. It was good to discuss the decisions that young people are currently making and explore ways to support students by planning effective financial education programmes. We looked at some best practice research and shared our free resources with teachers, providing inspiration and ideas for implementing financial education in their classrooms.
Claire and Yasmin would like to thank all the teachers who joined this workshop and contributed to its success. We enjoyed having the opportunity to meet so many social sciences teachers who are enthusiastic about financial education and supporting our young people to have bright financial futures.
